No. 23 St. Edward’s Sweep Dustdevils in 3-Game Series

AUSTIN, Texas – The No. 23 St. Edward's University Hilltoppers swept the Texas A&M International Dustdevils on Saturday as the Dustdevils came close to a win in game one, but couldn't close the game out.

GAME ONE: Texas A&M International 6, St. Edward's 7
The first game of the afternoon seemed to work in TAMIU's favor, as they were ahead 6-5 going into the last inning of the game, but St. Edward's overcame the one run deficit and scored two runs on two singles, a double, and a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the 7th to take the victory.

The Dustdevils outnumbered the Hilltoppers in hits 12-10, but three errors committed throughout the game helped St. Edward's score two unearned runs throughout the entirety of the game.

TAMIU's senior, Jeremy Gonzalez (3-7), took the loss for the Dustdevils as he pitched 6.2 innings and only gave up seven runs (two unearned) on 10 hits. Gonzalez also struck out four Hilltopper batters on the afternoon.

The Dustdevils' two influential offensive innings came in the top of the 3rd and 5th innings. In the 3rd inning, singles from senior Eric Moritz, junior Jeffrey Morgan, and junior Cody Perez, along with a sacrifice fly from senior Andrew Arteaga led to two runs. In the top of the 5th inning, the Dustdevils were able to score four runs on five hits.

Five TAMIU players batted .500 or above against the No. 23 St. Edward's pitching staff. Perez and Morgan both batted 2-3 at the plate while each adding one run to the scoreboard. Sophomore Alex Cabezas, senior Jake Cardoza, and sophomore Daniel Cruz each went 2-4 at the plate. Sophomore Connor Belvin went 1-3 at the plate, posting the team game-high 2-RBI.

GAME TWO: Texas A&M International 6, St. Edward's 13
The second game of the afternoon wasn't quite as close, as the No. 23 St. Edward's Hilltoppers got on the board early with one run in the bottom of the 1st, and continued to consecutively score, while the Dustdevils were only able to accumulate runs in the top of the 6th and 8th innings, taking the 6-13 loss.

The Hilltoppers outscored the Dustdevils not only in runs, but in hits 16-7. TAMIU also committed five errors defensively, which in reality didn't affect the score much, but only contributed to one unearned run.

Sophomore Connor Belvin led the Dustdevils on the offensive side, as he went 3-4 on the day with two runs and a plentiful 6-RBI. All of TAMIU's runs were scored off of hits by Belvin, as he had three of the six total Dustdevil hits, including his third and fourth homeruns of the season.

Also collecting hits for the Dustdevils was sophomore Alex Cabezas, senior Jake Cardoza, and junior Jeffrey Morgan. Scoring runs for the Dustdevils included two from each of the following – senior Andrew Arteaga, Cardoza, and Belvin.

Senior Garrett Taggart (2-6) recorded the loss for the Dustdevils as he pitched 4.1 innings and allowed five runs on seven hits. TAMIU's pitching staff relieved Taggart in the 5th inning, though could not hold the Hilltoppers to the five runs collected in the beginning of the game.

The Dustdevils will return to action in Laredo at Unitrade Stadium on Friday and Saturday to finish up the regular season against the nationally ranked St. Mary's University Rattlers.
