Lubbock Christian Shuts out TAMIU in Regular Season Finale

LAREDO, Texas – On a beautiful sunny Saturday, the Texas A&M International University Dustdevils' (24-23, 16-8 Heartland) regular season ended, as the Lubbock Christian Lady Chaparrals (36-12, 19-3 Heartland) shutout the Dustdevils 3-0 in the senior day finale. Despite the loss, the TAMIU softball team will be heading to St. Mary's University in San Antonio next week to compete in the Heartland Conference Tournament as the number two seed, and will face the number three seed, St. Edward's University for their first game of play.

In the final regular season game, the Lady Chaps outscored the Dustdevils 3-0, and outnumbered TAMIU in hits 8-3. Lubbock Christian's pitcher, Kelsey Hoppel (13-3), pitched a complete game shutout, and struck out six Dustdevil batters on the afternoon.

TAMIU's senior pitcher,
Sarah Johnson (9-4), recorded the loss against the Lady Chaps, as she also pitched a complete game and only allowed three runs on eight hits. Johnson also struck out four Lubbock Christian players while on the mound. Johnson kept the Lady Chaps to only one run throughout the first six innings of play.

Offensively, sophomore
Anna Parnin led the way as she batted 1-2 with her first double on the season. The other two hits came from sophomores Brittany Mussett and Krissy Sardelich. Junior Chelsea Capello reached base twice from base on balls, reaching base 2-3 on the afternoon. Freshman Krystal Perez tacked on a stolen base, to make it her fourth of the season.

Also on this day, TAMIU recognized two seniors who have been with the program since their freshman years - Johnson and
Mariena Gallardo.

Johnson completes the regular season with a 9-4 winning record as a pitcher, and is an All-Conference nominee. She developed into one of TAMIU's top pitchers, and currently ranks 3rd All Time in Games Started, Complete Games, Strikeouts, and Victories.

Gallardo also has been a four year starter for the Dustdevils, as she has been a consistent pitcher and power hitting first baseman for TAMIU. Currently Mariena ranks 3rd ALL-TIME in Pitching Victories (tied w/ Sarah Johnson), 3rd All-Time in TAMIU history in Doubles and Homeruns, 2nd All-Time in On Base Percentage, and FIRST All-Time in Base-on-Balls.

This game concluded regular season play, but keep posted on godustdevils.com for information in regards to the Heartland Conference Tournament which will be held May 30-April 2 in San Antonio.
