Dustdevils Drop Game One of the HC Softball Tournament

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Going into the tournament as the second seed, the Texas A&M International University Dustdevils (24-24) dropped game one of the Heartland Conference Tournament against number three seed St. Edward's University (26-20), 1-0 Friday afternoon under sunny skies at the St. Mary's Softball Stadium.

One throwing error in the top of the 5th inning faulted for the one Hilltopper run at the plate, eventually leading St. Edward's to the 1-0 win over TAMIU. A pair of St. Edward's pitchers (Katelyn Klug and Sarah Debrow) worked to complete the task of a combined shutout against TAMIU, only allowing the Dustdevils to post up four hits.

Freshman
Alyssa Acuna (2-3) accounted for two of the four Dustdevil hits on the afternoon – including her 6th double of the season. Also swinging the bats were sophomores Brittany Mussett and Krissy Sardelich, each with one hit apiece.

After the Hilltoppers scored the one run in the top of the 5th, TAMIU had their chance to match the score in the bottom of the 5th. With one out, Acuna singled up the middle to reach base. Next up, Sardelich had a perfect bunt and reached base to put the runners at 1st and 2nd. On a passed ball, the runners advanced to 2nd and 3rd, from where senior
Sarah Johnson filled the bases from a base on balls. With only one out and bases loaded, the Hilltoppers made a pitching change, and Debrow was able to close the inning out with two TAMIU strikeouts.

Despite the loss, Dustdevils' senior pitcher,
Mariena Gallardo (7-8,) performed well on the mound, as she pitched a complete game for the Dustdevils and only allowed four Hilltopper hits, and one unearned run while striking out a batter. Gallardo pitched a no-hitter until the top of the 4th, when St. Edward's Morgan Dufou hit a single with two outs on the board.

Tomorrow the Dustdevils will look to win their second game at 3 p.m. against the loser of the #1 St. Mary's and #4 Newman game to stay alive, as it is a double-elimination tournament.
