TAMIU Loses Non-Conference Battle Against Houston-Victoria

LAREDO, Texas - The University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars defeated the Texas A&M International Dustdevils 10-6 in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at Jorge Haynes Field.

UHV (22-13) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on a grand slam by Steven Ellis to dead center field in the top of the first against TAMIU starter Sammy Alvarado.  Alvarado settled down after the rough start and allowed no runs and only one hit over the next four innings.

With Alvarado steady on the mound, TAMIU's offense got busy and chipped away at the lead.  The Dustdevils scored once in the first inning, twice in the second and once in the third to tie the score 4-4.  TAMIU took a 5-4 lead on a RBI single by Nathan Halas in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Jaguars retook a 6-5 lead with two unearned runs in the top of the sixth off Alvarado but TAMIU (14-20) came back once more, tying the score 6-6 on a leadoff line drive home run to left field by Daniel Cruz in the bottom of the seventh inning.

UH-Victoria kept coming and the Jaguars took an insurmountable 10-6 lead with two, two-run home runs against TAMIU reliever Marty Bigham in top of the eighth inning.  Jaguar reliever Nathan Falkenstein allowed two singles but no runs over the final innings to earn the win of UHV.  He pitched five innings and allowed one run on six hits.  Bigham (1-2) took the loss for the Dustdevils.

TAMIU out-hit UH-Victoria 17-14 with eight players getting a hit and six players finishing with two or more hits.  Cruz led the hit parade by going 4-for-5 with two RBI while Cody Perez turned in an impressive 3-for-5 day at the plate.

TAMIU returns to action with a home Heartland Conference series against Lubbock Christian on Friday and Saturday at Uni-Trade Stadium.
