Dustdevils Advance In HC Tournament After Shutting Out Newman

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Texas A&M International University Dustdevils (25-24) will advance to their third game of the double-elimination Heartland Conference Softball Tournament after they shutout the Newman University Jets (17-39) 2-0 Friday afternoon.

After four scoreless innings, the Dustdevils took a 2-0 lead in the top of the 5th, as junior
Jessica Rivera reached base on a single through the right side. Following Rivera's single, sophomore Brenda Parnin came up to the plate with a mean swing, resulting in a two-run shot over the left field fence. Sophomore Brittany Mussett kept the inning going, as following Parnin's home run, she had a double to left-center. Though, two fly balls were caught following Mussett's appearance at the plate to end the inning.

All other innings remained scoreless as pitching and strong defense led to TAMIU's shutout over Newman.

Senior
Sarah Johnson (10-4) recorded her second shutout of the season as she pitched a complete game and only allowed seven Jet hits. She faced a total of 29 batters and struck out three at the plate.

Defensively, junior
Chelsea Capello and senior Mariena Gallardo led the team, each recording six putouts apiece. Mussett led the team with three assists against the Jets.

Offensively, Rivera led the team (1-1) with a 1.000 batting average. Three Dustdevils posted .500 batting averages including Parnin (2-4), Mussett (2-4), and Gallardo (1-2). Sophomore
Krissy Sardelich went 1-3 this afternoon, including her first triple of the season.

Next up, the Dustdevils will take on St. Edward's University at 6 p.m. Friday in San Antonio. The loser of this game will be eliminated, while the winner of this game will advance to the championship game(s) tomorrow against St. Mary's University.
