TAMIU Volleyball sweeps OPSU in dominant performance

LAREDO, Texas (September 24, 2015) -- The Texas A&M International University Volleyball team notched their first sweep of the season against Oklahoma Panhandle State at home on Thursday night (25-14, 25-20, 29-27). The Dustdevils improve their record to 3-2 in Conference play, and 3-6 overall.

TAMIU started hot out of the gate in Set 1. The Dustdevils captured their initial lead on the fifth serve, and never gave it back. Senior Madison Morris showed her strength by contributing 6 kills. Sophomore Amanda Wesner helped TAMIU to clinch the 25-14 win by serving the 5 final points - two of which were aces.

The second set featured fluctuating leads between TAMIU and OPSU. Junior Paula Mrowczynska and Freshman Ramey Gardner combined for 7 kills. A fight to the finish, the Dustdevils held strong defensively, sealing the victory on attack errors from OPSU.

With a chance to sweep, the Dustdevils started the third set with fire, but were challenged to the finish by the Aggies. Needing some extra points of play to crown the winner, TAMIU came out on top with a 29-27 victory.

Head Coach Susie Jangada praised her team's efforts by saying, "I am really happy that we got our first one (the sweep) playing at home." She also commented, "The crowd was influential, especially during the third set."

Additional notable players in the sweep include Senior Lizzie Prieto, with 38 assists, and Junior Cassandra Hernandez, with 17 digs.

Jangada went on to say, "We are looking forward to watching the growth of our fans as we continue to improve our discipline and build the culture. Many thanks to all that were in attendance!"
