Prieto pushes TAMIU to victory over Newman, 62-51

WICHITA, Kansas (January 2, 2016) -- Senior Guard Jessica Prieto put up 21 points for the Texas A&M International University Women's Basketball team in their 62-51 victory over the Newman Jets on Saturday afternoon. The Dustdevils improve to 5-7 overall, and move to 2-2 in Heartland Conference play.

Prieto's full-game effort (all 40 minutes played) included three baskets beyond the arc, along with 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. Also stepping up the for the Dustdevils was Senior Keiona Mathews and Junior Hannah Beede. Mathews added another double-double to her resume by collecting 18 points and 16 boards. Beede added 18 points of her own.

The Dustdevils took control early by generating an eight-point lead in the first quarter. In the second, TAMIU topped the Jets by one, giving the Dustdevils a nine-point advantage as they went to the locker room. TAMIU continued their control in the third quarter by outscoring Newman 11-8, which allowed the Dustdevils to hold on through the final ten minutes of play for the 61-52 win.

Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson commented on the victory by saying, "It's a good road win for us. We now have to evaluate these last two games. We must build on the positives and learn from our mistakes. It is important for us to have a good week of practice leading up to our two home games next week."

TAMIU shot 40% in the field, 50% beyond the arc, and 75% at the line in the second half to take the win.

Looking forward, the Dustdevils will return home on January 7th to face Rogers State in Heartland Conference action at the TAMIU KCB. Tip off is scheduled for 5:30pm CST.
