LAREDO, Texas (January 28, 2016) – The Texas A&M International Women's Basketball team won their fourth straight game Thursday evening. The Dustdevils defeated Heartland Conference opponent Newman 58-36.
After a tight first half of play TAMIU led the game 15-13. The Dustdevils came out strong in the third quarter, scoring 28 points, and holding the Jets to just 10. Up by 20 at the start of the fourth TAMIU outscored Newman 15-13 in the fourth extending final lead to 22.
Senior
Keiona Mathews led the way for TAMIU. Mathews went 6-13 from the field, scoring 16 points while grabbing six (6) rebounds.
Hannah Beede continued her outstanding play, scoring 12 points while recording five (5) steals and seven (7) rebounds. Senior
Jessica Prieto finished the game with 11 points, six (6) assists, and five (5) steals.
The Dustdevils went 15-27 from the field in the second half including nine (9) three-point baskets. The team capitalized on Newman mistakes, scoring 18 points after forcing a turnover.
Head Coach
Michelle Bento-Jackson commented after the game saying, "It was good to get the win but we certainly did not play our best basketball. Tomorrow we need to clean up several things in order to beat a very good Oklahoma Christian team on Saturday."
The Dustdevils are back in action Saturday January 30. TAMIU will continue Heartland Conference play against Oklahoma Christian. Tip-off is set for 1 pm at the TAMIU KCB.
