LAREDO, Texas (January 13, 2017) - The Texas A&M International University Men's Basketball team closes out a three-game road trip on Saturday, January 13. The Dustdevils will head up Interstate 35 to take on St. Mary's University at 3pm.
Last Contest:
The Dustdevils (10-6 Overall/4-2 Heartland Conference) were dealt a 73-83 loss to St. Edward's in their last matchup. Despite taking a 39-36 lead into the half, the Dustdevils were unable to hold off the Hilltoppers.
Denzel Bellot and
Jordan VanDeKop each scored 17 points for the Dustdevils, VanDeKop added six rebounds.
Arthur Santanna picked up a team high eight boards, adding seven points in the effort.
The Competition:
The Rattlers (5-10 Overall/3-3 Heartland Conference) come into play on Saturday winning three of their last four games. STMU dealt Oklahoma Christian a 66-63 defeat on January 7, putting the Rattlers at .500 in Heartland Play. Will Ferguson, had a career high 33 points in the win. Ferguson went 6 of 8 from 3-point range, added five rebounds and three assists. Yanni Wetzell also scored in double figures, recording his fourth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 boards.
Heartland Conference:
The Dustdevils are one of four teams tied for the top spot in the Heartland Conference heading into the weekend. Dallas Baptist, Newman, and St. Edward's all hold Heartland Conference records of 4-2. Rogers State and Arkansas Fort Smith are not far behind, holding 4-3 conference records. Eight teams are in action on Saturday after the cancelation of the Dallas Baptist-OPSU contest. History:
The Dustdevils defeated the Rattlers in both contests during the 2015-16 season. TAMIU earned a 78-72 victory at the TAMIU KCB on January 21, 2016. TAMIU Added another win on February 18 in San Antonio, defeating STMU 78-62. The teams have matched up 22 times with St. Mary's holding the all-time series lead, 17-5.
