Montabes’ Golden Goal Lift Dustdevils over Newman

LAREDO, Texas (October 21, 2017) – The Texas A&M International University men's soccer team needed extra time to defeat Newman 2-1 on Saturday at Dustdevil Soccer Field. Rafael Montabes scored from 30 yards out in the second minute of the second period of overtime to improve the Dustdevils to 8-4-2 and 7-4-1 in Heartland Conference while the Jets fall to 4-8-2 (2-7-3 HC).

The Dustdevils held a 21-7 advantages in shots as Rodrigo Zuniga scored his fourth goal in two matches on a match-high six shots while Montabes got his goal on five shots. Carlos Herrera (7-2-2) made one save in goal as TAMIU has now won four straight with him in goal.

Perales had the best chance in the opening 25 minutes for the Dustdevils getting on the end of a through ball from David Martinez at 22:22 but NU's Chase Bowman pushed the ball out for a corner kick. Max Cruz had another chance 15 minutes later after finding space down the right side but shot to near post was saved.

Both teams were more aggressive on the offensive side of the ball in the second half as it was the Dustdevils that struck first in the 69th minute on R. Zuniga's fourth of the season. The Laredo, Texas native beat the keeper far post on a nice through ball from David Martinez.

The Dustdevils looked on their way to a second straight win until a defensive mistake in the final minute of play allowed the Jets to equalize through a goal from Carlos Rubio Garcia.

R. Zuniga had the best chance of the first overtime in the 97th minute after Elias Perales played a ball into the middle of the box but his shot went wide left of the outstretched arms of NU' s Bowman.

Montabes scored his third career game winner and first of 2017 on a shot from 30 yards out at 1:04 into the second overtime. The Madrid, Spain native received the ball just near midfield off a free kick from Aaron Zuniga before turning and launching the ball into the back of the net.

The Dustdevils finish the regular season with two home matches welcoming Dallas Baptist and St. Mary's to the friendly confines of Dustdevil Soccer Field.
