SAN ANTONIO, Texas (November 18, 2017) – Junior Xabier Gomez scored all 16 of his points in the second half as the Texas A&M International University men's basketball team came from behind to defeat Wisconsin-Parkside 65-55 on the second night of the River City Classic at Greehey Arena in San Antonio, Texas. The Dustdevils have won two straight improving their record to 3-1 while Wisconsin-Parkside remain winless at 0-4.
"We were pretty solid defensively tonight," TAMIU head coach
Bryan Weakley said. "Towards the end of the game we got stops that we needed and got to the free-throw line. It was a step in the right direction but have a big test coming up next week with two games against Texas A&M-Kingsville."
Gomez scored in double-figures for the fourth straight game going 4-of-7 from the field and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. Dan Milota continued his strong start to his senior campaign with 16 points of his own on 3-of-7 seven from three-point range. Jeremy Wright was the third and final Dustdevil in double figures with 13 points and five assists.
The Dustdevils jumped out to an 8-4 lead before the first media timeout a pair of threes from Milota and a jumper from Wright. Wisconsin-Parkside proceeded to score the next six points followed by 7-0 run by the Dustdevils with four of those points coming Danny Spinuzza jumpers.
Wisconsin-Parkside retook momentum with just a little more than eight minutes left retaking the lead at 17-15 on a three from Bret Barclay. The two teams would share baskets until Adam Bonk's layup with less than a minute remaining gave the Rangers a 27-25 lead heading into halftime.
The Rangers scored the first three points of the second half before TAMIU went on an 8-0 run to retake the lead, 33-30, thanks to a pair of threes from Milota and Wright.After Wisconsin-Parkside tied the game at 39-39 with 13:03 remaining, Gomez went on a personal 7-0 run to give the Dustdevils a lead they would never relinquish.
TAMIU's lead was down to four, 48-44, with less than nine minutes remaining but neither team made a basket for the next five minutes before the Dustdevils went 6-of-6 from the charity stripe to extend the lead to nine. Milota would make two free throws with eight seconds remaining to give the Dustdevils their first double digit victory of the season.
The Dustdevils return to the court on Tuesday, Nov. 21, for their first true road game of the season against Texas A&M-Kinsgville.

Brendan Ortiz
Ortiz posted seven points and seven rebounds in his second career game at TAMIU. It marks the first time in his career that he has lead the team in rebounds.
Jeremy Wright
Wright has five or more assists in all four games this season for the Dustdevils for a total. Entering the season, he had never had five assists in a game during his career.
Xabier Gomez
With his 16 points in the win, Gomez now averages a team-high 14.8 points per game. With his seven made free-throws this evening, the Barcelona, Spain native is now 21-of-26 (81%) from the charity stripe.
Dan Milota
The senior has now scored 15 or more points in all three Dustdevil victories this season. Over his career, TAMIU is 5-4 when Milota registers double-figure points.
