CANYON, Texas (November 22, 2017) - The Texas A&M International University Women's Basketball team will look to pick up win number one this weekend at the Pak-A-Sak WT Thanksgiving Classic, hosted by West Texas A&M.
The Dustdevils open the weekend with a matchup against host, West Texas A&M on Friday, November 24 at 2:30pm.
Tournament play ends on Saturday at 12pm when the Dustdevils take on Eastern New Mexico University.
THE DUSTDEVILS:
The Dustdevils enter the weekend after a tight 43-46 loss to Texas A&M Kingsville on November 21. The loss moved the Dustdevils overall record to 0-5. TAMIU will play in the WT Thanksgiving Classic for the first time in two years after playing in the Eckerd College Tournament last fall.
SCOUTING THE LADY BUFFS:
The Lady Buffs enter the weekend as the nations #5 team. WT is riding a 3-0 start that has seen the Lady Buffs defeat opponents by an average of 14.4 points per game. WT is shooting 44% from the field through three games, sinking 28.6% of shots behind the arc. Lexy Hightower leads the Lady Buffs in scoring with 44 points (14.7ppg). Delevah Harris averages 6.3 boards per game and has pulled in 19 rebounds through three games.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES:
The Dustdevils and Lady Buffs will face off for just the second time in program history with WT leading the all-time series 1-0. The last matchup between the teams was November 28, 2015 when WT defeated TAMIU 90-57.
SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS:
The Greyhounds enter the weekend 1-2 and will face Colorado State-Pueblo before taking on the Dustdevils on Saturday. The Greyhounds picked up their first win over New Mexico Highlands on November 18, defeating the Cowgirls 53-34 on the road. The Greyhounds have played a tough exhibition schedule to open the season, falling to Division I Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado State.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES:
Saturday's game marks the fourth time the schools will face off with ENMU holding a 2-1 advantage over the Dustdevils through three games.
DUSTDEVIL LEADERS:
TAMIU is led by Tantashea Giger who averages 18.6 points per game with a total of 93 points this season. Julia Hanni leads the team in rebounds with 29. Ashley Perez continues to be the team leader in assists with 21 (4.2apg).
The Dustdevils are shooting 31.2% from the field and 28.2% from behind the arc through five games. TAMIU is averaging 53.8 points per game through five games this season.
