BELLINGHAM, Washington (December 18, 2017) - The Texas A&M International University Women's Basketball team opened play in the 2017 WWU Holiday Hoops Classic on Monday. The Classic is hosted by TAMIU's first opponent, Western Washington University. The Dustdevils fell 59-90 and move to 2-11 overall on the season.
AFTER 1: TAMIU 11 - WWU 36
The Dustdevils would find themselves in an early hole as the Vikings put up 36 points in the first 10 minutes of action. TAMIU was held to just 11 points, leading to an early 25 point deficit.
AT THE HALF: TAMIU 27 - WWU 52
The Dustdevils would come out with 16 points in the second quarter but could not cut into the lead as WWU also posted 16 points in the second. After 20 minutes of action, TAMIU found themselves down 25.
AFTER 3: TAMIU 48 - WWU 68
TAMIU would put up their best quarter offensively in what has proven to be the worst offensive quarter this season for the Dustdevils. While the Dustdevils are typically outscored following the break, it was the Dustdevils who would cut into a 25 point lead by outdueling the Vikings in the third. TAMIU recorded 21 points while holding the Vikings to 16.
FINAL: TAMIU 59- WWU 90
The Vikings would use a late fourth-quarter run to push their lead back above 25 to finish the game ahead by 31. The late run would deal TAMIU its 11th loss of the season.
STAT LEADERS:
Passionate Amukamara would pick up a team high 22 points in the loss.
Tantashea Giger was the only other Dustdevil to record double-digit points, putting up 19. Despite making just four baskets from the field, Giger went 10-20 from the stripe.
UP NEXT:
The Dustdevils close out play in the Pacific Northwest on Tuesday when they face Canada's only NCAA Division II Institution in Simon Fraser. The Clan fell to the Nations third ranked team in West Texas A&M earlier on Monday 59-78. With the loss SFU enters Tuesday's game at 4-5 overall.
