Dustdevils Defense Shuts Down Southwestern Adventist

LAREDO, Texas (December 3, 2017) – Kamari Robinson just missed out on his second career double-double as the Texas A&M International University won their third game in four days defeating Southwestern Adventist 67-36 on Sunday at the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building on Sunday afternoon. It marked the second straight game that the Dustdevils held an opponent to 36 points, tying a school record.

"I thought our defense today was good again," TAMIU head coach Bryan Weakley. "We have to find a way to score more points if we are going to compete in the Heartland Conference."

Robinson scored a game-high 14 points going 6-of-10 from the field while pulling down a team-high nine rebounds. Danny Spinuzza had a career-high 12 points with three assists and three rebounds. Dan Milota reached double figures for the eighth time this season with 11 points while Shea Garland chipped in 10 points.

The Dustdevils (6-4) forced a season-high 24 turnovers while holding SWAU (5-11) to 10-of-40 from the field and 1-of-13 from three. The Dustdevils have now won three games in a row for the first time since a six-game winning streak in Feb. 2017.

MIlota scored eight points in the first five minutes to help the Dustdevils jump out to a 15-2 lead. Following a layup by the Knights' leading scorer, Travias Gagua, with 13:36 remaining in the first half, TAMIU scored 13 of the next 16 points while holding the Knights without a basket for more than nine minutes. The Dustdevils defense held SWAU to 16.7 % shooting in the first half including 0-of-5 from three.

Spinuzza opened the second half with one of his four 3-points on the evening making it a 23-point lead for the Dustdevils, 36-13. A Robinson layup and three from
Spinuzza made it 47-21 with under 14 minutes remaining. The lead was as high as 29 with 12:37 remaining courtesy of a three from Marek Hajek and a fast break layup from Jeremy Wright.

SWAU went on a 6-0 run cutting the lead to 23 with under 10 minutes left but the Dustdevils turned up the defensive pressure returning the lead to 29, 61-32, at the under-eight media timeout. Both teams struggled from the field combining for three field goals over the final five minutes of the game.

The Dustdevils open Heartland Conference on Saturday, Nov. 9, at home against St. Mary's at 3 p.m. All home games are broadcast on the Heartland Conference Digital Network.
