VICTORIA, Texas (March 14, 2017) – The Texas A&M International University Baseball team took on the University of Houston Victoria in an early week doubleheader on Tuesday. The Dustdevils were dealt a 2-4 loss in game one, picking up a 15-1 win in game two. The Dustdevils move to 5-13 overall.
Game 1: TAMIU 2, UHV 4
A pitchers duel brewed through four innings of play in game one. Neither team managed a run until the Jaguars plated four runs in the fifth inning, taking the 4-0 advantage.
Alex Medina would get TAMIU on the board in the sixth inning. Medina lined an RBI double off the right centerfield wall to drive home
Daniel Espinosa.
Ricky Gonzalez followed with an RBI single to score Medina, cutting the UHV lead to two.
The Dustdevils were held scoreless in the seventh before the final out was recorded.
Devon Torres got the nod on the mound. Torres tossed two innings, allowing three hits, picking up a strikeout.
Dustin Labit would relieve Torres, throwing two and a third. Labit took the loss, moving to 1-1.
Hugo Mendiola and
Jorge Gonzalez combined for two innings of relief.
Game 2: TAMIU 15 – UHV 1
Sergio Pollorena would put TAMIU ahead early in game two, launching a two-run homerun over the left field wall. With no outs in the second, Pollorena sent a drive over the wall, scoring
William Mora.
Alexander Cabezas would give TAMIU a 3-0 lead after doubling to left center. Medina would come around to score on the play. A fourth Dustdevil run crossed the plate after
Mario Ramirez reached first on errant throw from the first baseman, scoring Cabezas.
Adrian Castillo and Ramirez would each add a run after being walked in with the bases loaded.
UHV would pick up a run in the third on a solo homerun before TAMIU added nine more runs, opening a 15-1 lead after six.
Neither team scored in the final frame, leading to a 15-1 win for TAMIU.
Eduardo Rodriguez got the start, tossing two scoreless innings.
Coleman Butler, Kyle Keishnick, Fernando Contreras,
Nick Perales, and
Eleazar Rojas each tossed an inning in relief.
Coleman Butler picked up the win, moving to 1-1.
Up next:
The Dustdevils host Rogers State in a conference series, beginning on March 17. First pitch is set for 1pm.
