Rallies fall short for TAMIU in series opener


LAREDO, Texas (March 17, 2017) – The Texas A&M International University Baseball team opened their second Heartland Conference series on Friday. The Dustdevils hosted Rogers State in a doubleheader at Jorge Haynes Field. The Dustdevils fell in game one, 2-4 and 8-16 in game two. TAMIU now sits at 5-14 overall (0-5 Heartland Conference).
 
Game 1: TAMIU 2, RSU 4
The Hillcats jumped out to an early lead in game one, plating a run in three of the first four innings. Through four and a half innings TAMIU trailed 0-3.
 
Mario Ramirez would put TAMIU on the board in the fifth, driving home two runs on a single to center. Adrian Castillo and Alexander Cabezas.
 
The Hillcats would add a fourth run in the seventh, pushing the lead back to two.
 
TAMIU ended the game with the bases loaded, falling 2-4.
 
Devon Torres got the start on the mound, tossing five and two thirds. Torres struck out five Hillcats in the loss, falling to 1-3.
 
Jeremy Valadez and Ramirez each picked up a pair of hits in game one.
 
Game 2: TAMIU 8 – RSU 16
RSU used four runs in the first inning to open an early lead in game two. The Dustdevils would battle back with a run in each of the first three innings, bringing TAMIU within two runs through three innings.
 
The Hillcats would add a run in the fourth and two in the sixth before TAMIU put up a three-run sixth inning.
 
Erasmo Gonzalez Jr. drove in William Mora on a sacrifice fly, bringing the Dustdevils within four. Adrian Castillo brought TAMIU within two runs on a two RBI single to left, scoring Alex Medina and Sergio Pollorena.
 
Mario Ramirez would drive home two runs for the Dustdevils in the eighth inning, bringing TAMIU within a run.
 
RSU added seven runs in the ninth, putting the game out of reach.
 
Up Next:
The Dustdevils close out the weekend series with Rogers State on Saturday, March 18. First pitch is set for 1pm.
