WICHITA FALLS, Texas (September 1, 2017) – Michael Iskander's first half goal proved to be the difference as the Texas A&M International University men's soccer team defeated UC Colorado Spring 1-0 in a physical, hard fought match on Friday afternoon at Stang Park in Wichita Falls. It was the first meeting between the two programs as the Dustdevils improved to 3-5 all-time against schools from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
It was a physical first 10 minutes of the match as neither team had a shot on goal until Iskander's header at 12:10 forced saved from David Meyer.
Kevin Hernandez had another opportunity for the Dustdevils a minute later but Meyer was there for his second save of the match.
Iskander made the best out of his second opportunity in front of goal scoring what proved to be the game-winner in the 27
th minute. The senior midfielder was the recipient of a nice play from fellow senior
Yair Hernandez who pulled the keeper out of the area before finding Iskander in front of the empty net for the Kirkcalyd, Scotland, natives, first career game-winner.
The Mountain Lions picked up their intensity searching for an equalizer before half time but
Carlos Herrera showed his quality making three saves in the final 10 minutes to preserve the Dustdevils lead.
It was a physical first 45 minutes as the teams combined for 13 fouls while UCCS heald a 7-4 advantage in shots. Both teams put three shots-on-goal.
The Dustdevils came out looking to double their advantage in the first ten minutes of the second half as Iskander and Hernandez both sent shots over the crossbar.
Alan Rivera came close to opening his scoring account in the final five minutes but his attempt was snuffed out by Meyer.
Herrera (1-0) picked up a shutout in his debut appearance for the Dustdevils making three saves on 10 shots. In total, the Dustdevils were outshot 10-9 but put more shot on-target with four.
TAMIU will return to Stang Park on Sunday, Sept. 3, for a neutral site matchup against Fort Lewis with a scheduled kickoff of 10:00 a.m. The Skyhawks lead the all-time series 2-0 with their last meeting coming in 2014.
