Bargallo’s Golden Goal Lifts Dustdevils Past Eagles

LAREDO, Texas (September 21, 2017) – Cio Bargallo recorded her third mulit-goal game of the season including the game-winner as the Texas A&M International University women's soccer team defeated Oklahoma Christian 2-1 in overtime on Thursday night at Dustdevil Soccer Field. With the win, the Dustdevils improved to 2-4-1 and 1-3-0 in Heartland Conference play while OC fell to 1-6-0 (0-4-0).

Bargallo's two-goal performance is the third of the season tying the school record set by Stephanie Webb in 2016. The sophomore recorded a match-high seven shots coming off the bench for the first time in her career. Abigail Colmernares and Nicole Cohen both registered three shots while junior Aubrey Hall (2-4-1) made seven saves in goal for the Dustdevils.

The Dustdevils first real chance of the match came in the 5th minute of the match when Monica Castro's left footed corner kick skipped in front of goal with no Dustdevils around. Nicole Cohen registered the first shot for TAMIU just four minutes later at 8:12 but her shot went wide.

TAMIU scored the first goal of the match for just the second time of the season when Bargallo latched onto a long ball from Susanna Abrahamsson on a perfectly timed run down the right side beating the keeper to the far post ending the Dustdevils 317 minute scoreless streak. It was Abrahamsson's first assists of the season and second of her career.

Bargallo came close to doubling the lead in the 36th minute but her first shot went wide with the second being saved by OC's Addison Milner. The Dustdevils finished the first 45 minutes trailing 8-7 shots but were able to put three of those on-target.

The Ealges started he second half with more energy and got an equalizer at 68:07 on a long range shot from Darrian Palacions on an assist from Courtney Nixon. The pressure continued as TAMIU's Hall made saves on Dakota Milner and Lauren Parker just minutes later.

It was the Dustdevils who nearly stole the game near regulation but Colmenares shot went straight to the keeper. Valeria Macias found separation on the right side near the byline before crossing the ball just over the head of Macias right on the foot of Colmenares.

After losing in overtime last Saturday, Bargallo made sure the Dustdevils would be the one celebrating scoring her first career golden goal on a rebound from her shot on a breakaway. She got behind the defense but A. Milner could only save the sophomore once as she chipped the rebound into the top left corner giving the Dustdevils their first conference win of the season.

TAMIU will return to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 23, with a match against Lubbock Christian. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. at Dustdevil Soccer Field. The first 50 fans will receive a TAMIU scarf.
