LAREDO, Texas (September 4, 2017) – The Texas A&M International University women's soccer team will look to open the season 2-0 for the first time since 2010 when they host St. Mary's on Tuesday, Sept. 5, at Dusdevil Soccer Field in the Heartland Conference opener for both teams. The first 100 fans to attend Tuesday's match will receive free Texas is a Dustdevil State t-shirts and be entered for a chance to participate in the halftime promotion. Also, there will be a drawing for an iPad Mini.
A LOOK AT THE ALL-TIME SERIES
The Dustdevils and Rattlers will meet for the 27
th time on Tuesday night with the Rattlers holding a 23-3 advantage in the all-time series. Four of the past five matches have been decided by one goal including the last time TAMIU defeated StMU on Oct. 27, 2014 in Laredo.
A LOOK AT THE RATTLERS
Corwyn Ritch enters 17
th season at the helm at St. Mary's where he has guided the team to six straight Heartland Conference Tournament appearances. Heather Dawson and Alexia Maldonado are the top returners for a Rattlers team that finished 8-6-4 in 2016. They were both named to the All-Conference Preseason team in August.
Dawson scored both goals from her defensive position in StMU's season opening 2-0 win over Delta State on Saturday. The senior from Waco, Texas now has 10 career goals including two or more in a season since her sophomore season. Maldonado earned 2
nd Team All-Conference honors in 2016 after scoring seven goals and one assist as a freshman. She recorded one shot on Saturday.
Rachel Gurinsky is another player to pay attention to as the senior, who plays on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball ,had a team-high four shots during the season opener. She earned 2
nd Team All-Conference in 2016 after leading the team with four assists while adding five goals.
Senior Caitlin McCarrell appeared in her 21
st match for the Rattlers on Saturday picking up her first career shutout. She made a career-high seven saves en routing to picking up her seventh career win.
BARGALLO NAMED CONFERENCE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sophomore
Cio Bargallo was named the Heartland Conference Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week after scoring a school record four goals in the Dustdevils 5-3 over Delta State last week. The Blanes, Spain native became the sixth player in conference history to score four goals in a match and first since 2015.
Bargallo is the eighth Dustdevil in program history to earn conference player of the week honors and first since Chelsea Knaack on Sept. 15, 2015. She enters this week's of matches ranked seventh in goals scored in a career with 10, sixth in shots (71) and seventh in shots on goal (30).
NEW FACES MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN OPENER
The Dustdevils started seven new players during the season opener last week against Delta State including goalkeeper
Aubrey Hall. The Sacramento, Calif. native came up huge in her first career appearance in the Maroon and Silver denying the Lady Statesmen twice at point blank range.
Valeria Macias and
Nicole Cohen paried well with Bargallo up top as Macias had a team-high seven shots with three of those on-target while Cohen disrupted the Delta State defense with her speed on and off the ball.
Araceli Martinez and
Tayler Schott got the start in the midfield for TAMIU with Schott picking up an assist on the game-winning goal from Bargallo in the 60
th minute. The backline had two new faces as
Tamara Cafuta and
Viviana Parada both opened their TAMIU career with starts. They were part of a defense that held Delta State to six shots in the first half.
SAME TEAM, SAME RESULT
Both the Dustdevils and Rattlers opened their 2017 campaign with wins against Delta State this past week in Dallas on the campus of Richland College. TAMIU defeated the Lady Staesmen 5-3 on Thursday afternoon with StMU defeating DSU 2-0 on Saturday.

The Dustdevils will hit the road for their final non-conference matches of the season this week with Eastern New Mexico Sept. 8 in San Antonio and Midwestern State on Sept. 8 in Wichita Falls.
