Dustdevils Fall To DBU In Straight Sets

LAREDO, Texas - Texas A&M International (3-16, 1-4 HC) dropped a match to Dallas Baptist (9-13, 2-3 HC) in straight sets (23-25, 17-25, 17-25) on Thursday.

However, not all was lost for the Dustdevils on the night. Ronnie Fountain and Lacy Asdourian cemented their place in program history with their performances. With 31 assists on the night, Fountain moved into seventh place on the All-Time assists list with 912 career assists, passing Diana Lopez's mark from 2002. Asdourian pulled into 10th place on the All-Time Digs list with 20 digs on the night, 601 for her career, passing Daria Winckler in the 2011-12 seasons.

The opening set was the closest of the match with both teams battling early and trading points. DBU started to break away on a 5-0 lead to take a 9-5 lead. However, the Dustdevils answered right back tying things at 10-10. From things grew close again, until TAMIU went on a 6-1 run to take a 18-14 lead. The Patriots kept grinding and tied things at 20-20. They forced three more ties before retaking the lead at 24-23 and taking the set on the next point 25-23.

The Dustdevils didn't seemed phased by DBU's late charge at the start of the second set, as they began on a 4-1 run. However, the Patriots would once again come roaring back to go on an astonishing 12-0 run, taking a 16-6 lead. They never looked back and took the set 25-17.

DBU rekindled their momentum coming out of the break, taking a early 3-1 lead in the third set. TAMIU hung around for much of the early set, but a 5-2 run by the Patriots started to put things out of reach with a 12-7 lead. An 8-0 run that gave DBU a 20-8 lead all put sealed the set. However, the Dustdevils refused to go down with out a fight and put together a 6-2 run of their own to cut the lead to 22-15. Unfortunately, they were not able to complete the comeback as the Patriots claimed the match and the set 25-17.

TAMIU will continue the homestand on Saturday, Oct. 13 at Noon as they welcome St. Edward's, with a free kid's clinic to follow the match for elementary through high school age students.
