LAREDO, Texas - Texas A&M International (4-15, 2-4 HC) knocked off St. Edward's (12-10, 2-4 HC) in a five-set classic (25-22, 19-25, 21-25, 25-21, 15-13) on Saturday.
Freshman Samantha Herrera paced the Dustdevils in the victory with her first career double-double of 14 kills and 10 digs, as well as four blocks, two assists and an ace. Ronnie Fountain finished one dig shy of a double-double with 18 assists and nine digs, as well as a kill. Lacy Asdourian also had a strong performance with 22 digs, seven assists and an ace.
TAMIU came out hot in the first set, as they opened on an 8-3 run. The Hilltoppers battled back to pull within three at 11-7 though. However, the Dustdevils would hold them at bay going up 19-12. SEU kept fighting and cut the lead back to three at 22-19 but would not get any closer, as TAMIU eventually took the set 25-22.
The Hilltoppers managed to rebound from their slow start as they opened the second set on a 4-1 run. The Dustdevils counterpunched and cut the lead to 5-4. However, a 10-2 run put SEU up 18-9. TAMIU did not go down with out a fight, as they managed to pull within four at 21-17. Unfortunately, the Hilltoppers eventually took the set 25-19.
The third set was extremely close for much of the frame, as both teams traded point back and forth. SEU managed to break away thanks to a 7-1 run, taking a 20-15 lead. The Dustdevils tried to mount a comeback as they trimmed the lead to 21-19, but couldn't get any closer. The Hilltoppers eventually took the set 25-21.
The fourth set was also close early, but the Dustdevils came out on top as they went on a 6-0 run to take a 11-7 lead. SEU managed to cut the lead to 13-12 and tied it at 16-16, however they were unable to retake the lead. TAMIU forced a fifth and final set with a 25-21 decision.
It looked as though SEU would run away with the final set, as they opened on a 5-1 run. However, the Dustdevils battled back and tied things at 10-10 and took the lead at 11-10. From there, they managed to hold off the Hilltoppers and claimed the victory with a 15-13 decision.
TAMIU will continue the final homestand of the regular season on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. as they welcome Newman.
