LAREDO, Texas. - Texas A&M International (4-16, 2-4 HC) completed the season sweep of Newman (1-20, 0-5 HC) with a five-set victory (25-19, 20-25, 26-24, 25-21, 15-6) on Thursday.
Mackenzie Catalina led the Dustdevils offensively with 14 kills in addition to four digs, three blocks and an ace. Allison Wade also contributed nine kills, six digs, two assists and a block. Ronnie Fountain logged a double-double with 37 assists and 10 digs, as well as three aces and two kills. Defensively, Anabella Forncrook paced the squad with 19 digs.
The first set was incredibly close as both teams traded points for much of the set with neither able to gain a firm lead. However, TAMIU was able to break away thanks to a 7-1 run that led to a 17-14 lead. They finished the set on a 8-2 run, claiming the 25-19 decision.
The second set was just as close for most of the frame. However, this time momentum swung toward the Jets, with Newman going on a 6-1 run late to take a 21-16 lead. They eventually took the set 25-20.
After the break, the third set saw seven lead changes that were parts of several multiple point runs by both squads. NU took the lead to stay a 21-18 and held on for the 26-24 decision.
The Dustdevils found their footing in the fourth set, as they opened on an 8-0 run and never trailed. While the Jets were able to rally and trim the lead to 20-18 late, TAMIU forced the fifth and final set with the 25-21 decision.
The fifth set was all Dustdevils as they opened on a 10-2 run. Newman never really found their balance in set, and TAMIU took the match with a 15-6 decision.
The Dustdevils will continue the final regular season homestand and celebrate Senior Day on Saturday, Oct. 20 at noon as they face off Arkansas-Fort Smith.
