LAREDO, Texas - Texas A&M International men's basketball (2-3) dropped a heartbreaker 53-50 to UTPB (3-1) to close out the 2018 Courtyard Marriott Classic on Saturday.
Brent Finn led the Dustdevils with 16 point as well as one assist. Xabier Gomez put up 13 points with three rebounds, three steals and an assist. Steven Coulanges contributed 10 points and three rebounds.
The first half was extremely close with five lead changes and four ties. Neither team was able to get much more than a two possession lead in the period. The Falcons took a 27-21 lead into the intermission.
After the break, UTPB found their footing offensively as they ran out to their first 10 point lead at 33-32 six minutes into the half. They pushed their lead to its largest at 44-29 with 7:03 left in the half. However, TAMIU began to slowly chip away, and pulled within three points at 51-48 with 33 seconds left. Unfortunately, the comeback would not materialize as the Falcons put the game out of reach with free throws, taking the 53-50 victory.
The Dustdevils will go on the road for a three-game road trip beginning Tuesday, Nov. 20 as they travel to Kingsville, Texas to face off against Texas A&M Kingsville at 7 p.m.
