SALT LAKE CITY - Texas A&M International women's basketball (0-4) fell 73-66 to Colorado Christian (2-2) on Saturday.
Christine Ortega led the Dustdevils with her first double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds as well as two steals. Tantashea Giger posted 10 points with four rebounds, an assist, a block and a steal. Ciera Walker finished a point shy of her own double-double with nine points, 12 rebounds and an assist. Jaden Gonzalez contributed nine points, two rebounds, two assists and a steal.
The game started close as the Dustdevils held a slim lead at 7-5 early in the first quarter. However, that lead would be short lived as the Cougars ran out to a 15-10 lead midway through the quarter. CCU eventually took a 25-16 lead into the final 10 minutes of the half.
In the second quarter, the Cougars carried over the momentum from the first quarter and ran out to a 12 point lead at 31-19. TAMIU fought back and cut the lead to a single point at 37-36 with 48 seconds left in the half. However, CCU countered and took a 39-36 lead into the intermission.
The third period was as close as things got in the game, with the lead staying within two possession for the entirety of the period. The Cougars took a 52-46 lead into the final 10 minutes.
CCU found their footing in the fourth quarter, and pushed their lead out to 14 at 64-50 with 6:23 left. However, the Dustdevils kept fighting and tried to mount a comeback late, trimming the lead to 69-66 with 1:28 left. Unfortunately, that would be as close they would get as CCU would hold on for the 73-66 victory.
TAMIU will back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 20 as they travel to Kingsville, Texas to face of against Texas A&M Kingsville.
