KINGSVILLE, Texas - Texas A&M International women's basketball (0-5) fell in a 80-69 decision to Texas A&M Kingsville (2-2) on Tuesday.
Tantashea Giger led the Dustdevils with 17 points, and finished two rebounds shy of a double-double with eight as well as an assist and a steal. Troi Lucas put up 11 points. Ciera Walker posted 10 points and seven rebounds. Lashae Rolle contributed nine points, seven rebounds and a block.
After the Javelinas opened on a 5-0 run, the Dustdevils found their footing and bounced back to tie things at 5-5, and eventually took their first lead at 8-7. However, TAMUK counterpunched by retaking the lead and pushing it to 17-8 with a minute left in the quarter. TAMIU kept battling and cut the lead to 18-13 as period ended.
The second quarter was all Javelinas as they pushed their lead to and maintained a double digit advantage. At its height, TAMUK led by 16 at 40-24. The Dustdevils didn't stopping fighting though, as they trimmed the lead to 44-34 headed into the intermission.
TAMIU carried their momentum into the second half as they were able to cut the lead to four at 51-47 with 2:21 left in the third quarter. However, the Javelinas steadied themselves and pushed the lead back out to 61-51 going into the final 10 minutes.
In the fourth quarter, while the Dustdevils weren't able to mount a comeback, they were able to hold TAMUK in check as the Javelinas held steady within a few points of their 10 point lead, and took a 80-69 victory.
TAMIU will be back in action as they travel to Golden, Colo. on Friday, Nov. 23 to face off against Colorado School of Mines.Â
