LAREDO, Texas - Texas A&M women's basketball (0-11) dropped a 90-67 decision to Texas A&M-Kingsville (3-6) on Monday.
Four Dustdevils finished in double-digits, with Christine Ortega leading the squad with 18 points in addition to four rebounds, an assist and a steal. Ciera Walker posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds as well as two steals. Alliyah Bryant also added 15 points with three rebounds and five assists. Vanessa Oyola contributed 11 points, three rebounds and three assists.
For most of the first quarter the game was tight with neither team able to gain more than a two possession lead. Unfortunately, the Javelinas began to pick up some momentum as they period ended, taking their first double-digit lead at 22-12 with a 1:28 left and took a 24-13 lead into the second quarter.
TAMUK continued to roll in the second period as they took their largest lead of the half at 38-19 with under four minutes left in the half. However, TAMIU slowed started to mount a comeback, chipping away at the lead. They closed out the half on an incredible 17-0 run to go into to the intermission only trailing 38-36.
After the break, the Dustdevils had multiple opportunities to take the game over as they held the Javelinas to a single possession lead for most of the period, but they were unable to break through to retake the lead for the first time since the opening moments of the game. With TAMUK regaining their footing, they pushed their advantage back out to double-digits, taking a 62-48 lead into the final quarter.
While TAMIU attempted to trim the lead back to a manageable distance, the Javelinas continued to make shots. Between shooting 58 percent, 66 percent from beyond the arc, in the fourth quarter and the Dustdevils getting in foul trouble, TAMUK was able to put the game out of reach. They took a 90-67 decision in the victory.
TAMIU will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 29 as they close out their non-conference schedule and the calendar year against UT Permian Basin at 2 p.m. Â
