AUSTIN, Texas (February 21, 2017) – The Dustdevils led from start to finish as Texas A&M International University women's basketball ended a 27-game road losing streak with a 47-45 victory over St. Edward's on Thursday evening at The Hilltop.
Tantashea Giger led the way in the win picking up her third consecutive double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds as the Dusdtevils won on the road for the first time since Feb. 25, 2016.
AFTER 1: TAMIU 13 – SEU 9
Neither team shot the ball well in the opening minutes going a combined 4-of-18 from the field but it was the Dustdevils who lead 6-2 heading into the media timeout. Following a pair of
Jaden Gonzales free throws that stretched the lead to six, 8-2, the Hilltoppers scored on back-to-back possessions making It a one-point game. The Dustdevils responded with a
Kydell Pearson layup and a three-point play the old-fashioned way by
Ashley Perez.
AFTER 2: TAMIU 21 – SEU 21
The two teams exchanged 3-pointers in the first two minutes as the Dustdevils continued to lead by four before Giger's layup a minute later pushed the lead back to six, 18-12. TAMIU went without a basket over the next six minutes as the Hilltoppers went on a 6-0 run to take their first lead of the game at 21-18.
Passionate Amukamara ended the scoring drought with a 3-pointer from the left corner with just over 30 seconds remaining in the first half to tie the game at 21-all.
AFTER 3: TAMIU 39 - SEU 35
Perez's three from straight away gave the Dustdevils a 24-21 lead 25 seconds in the second half as
LaShae Rolle followed that up with her first basket of the game on the next possession pushing the lead to five. The Hilltoppers would respond with an 8-2 run of their own over the next three minutes making it 30-29 before Pearson got her offensive rebound for an easy layup restoring the three-point lead. The lead was down to one when Perez stole an errant pass and found a streaking Amukamara for an easy lay-in making it 36-33. With the clock winding down in the final minute, Gonzales made second three of the evening giving the Dustdevils a four-point advantage after three quarters of action.
FINAL: TAMIU 47 – SEU 45
The Hilttoppers had no answer for Giger to start the fourth with the senior scoring the first four points for the Dustdevils forcing a Hilltopper timeout with a 43-39 lead. Amukamara flew by her defender to for a right-handed lay-up pushing the lead to six, 45-39, with less than five minutes remaining. The Hilltoppers had the lead down to two, 45-43, with less than two minutes on a layup from Fairen Sutton.
Julia Hanni went 1-of-2 from the free three stretching the lead to three with 20 seconds reaming but SEU was able to get an easy bucket on the other end making it 46-45 under 11 seconds. Dania Gonzalez made one of her two free throws to restore the two-point as SEU was unable to get the game tying shot to fall.
