Non-conference slate closes in San Antonio with Weekend Series at St. Mary's

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (March 15, 2018) – The Texas A&M International University Baseball team closes non-conference play in San Antonio this weekend. The Dustdevils (8-9) will play four games with St. Mary's University (12-6) on Friday and Saturday. 
 
THE WEEKEND RUNDOWN:
The Dustdevils and Patriots will play a four-game series that will not count towards a Heartland Conference record. A full schedule can be found below. 

FRIDAY, March 16
2:00 p.m. – Seven inning game
4:00 p.m. - Nine inning game
 
SATURDAY, March 17
1:00 p.m. – Seven inning game
3:00 p.m. – Nine inning game

ST. MARY'S UNIVERSITY (12-6)
The Rattlers enter play at 12-6, coming off a weekend split with St. Edward's. StMU took a game on Friday and one on Saturday to earn the 2-2 split with the Hilltoppers. This weekend marks the first time TAMIU and StMU meet in the 2018 season. 
 
Series Kings: The Rattlers have won every series this season except the split with St. Edward's. StMu went 0-3 at the Houston Winter Invitational before sweeping Tarleton State at home (3-1, 6-0, 8-4). The Rattlers picked up their second straight sweep at home against Our Lady of the Lake (5-4, 17-6, 9-4). Kingsville would face the same fate on their home turf, falling in a three-game series (8-3, 4-5, 6-4). The Rattlers would take two from Houston Victoria, once at home and once at Riverside Stadium in Victoria. 
 
Hot Hitters: St. Mary's is hitting .289 as a team this season, led by Donnie and Andrew Perez. Donnie Perez boasts a .387 average with five homeruns and 16 RBI. Andrew Perez sits at .303 with 23 hits and seven RBI. The Rattlers average 5.9 runs per game this season.
 
The Staff: The Rattlers post a team ERA of 3.75. Fernando Fernandez-Beltran leads the team in strikeouts with 42 in 35.1 innings pitcher. Fernandez-Beltran is 2-2 and holds an ERA of 3.31. Zach De La Garza leads the team in wins with three. De La Garza is 3-1 this season with an ERA of 2.25, striking out 31 batters in 32.0 innings of work. 
 
A LOOK AT THE DUSTDEVILS (8-9)

After winning six of their last seven games, the Dustdevils fell 1-3 in a four-game series with Lubbock Christian this past weekend. The Chaps hit eight homeruns on Friday in a pair of wins before the Dustdevils and Chaps split Saturday's doubleheader. Mario Ramirez led the Dustdevils to a 7-6 win in game three of the series in the bottom of the seventh inning. 
 
At the Dish: Mathew Trevino and Daniel Espinosa lead the Dustdevils at the plate this season. Espinosa is hitting .340 over 15 games this season. The sophomore is the only Dustdevil to pick up a triple this season while picking up 17 hits. Trevino is hitting .333 with 12 hits and six RBI this season. As a team, the Dustdevils are hitting .247
 
On the Mound: The Dustdevils post a team ERA of 4.26 this season while holding opposing teams to batting .254. Hugo Mendiola and Justin Diaz lead the team in wins with each picking up two thus far. Mendiola has made three starts at sits at 2-1 with 20 strikeouts. Diaz picked up the win after throwing a third of an inning in Saturday's walk-off win. 
 
ALL-TIME SERIES:
The Rattlers and Dustdevils have faced off 55 times in program history with StMU leading the all-time series 43-11. 

TAMIU picked up a 2-1 series win over St. Mary's in the 2017 season. The Dustdevils dropped the series opener in Dickson Stadium before taking game two 2-0 and the finale 5-4.
 
The teams last faced off in a three-game set at Dickson Stadium in 2017 with the last game being played on April 7, 2017. This weekend's four-game series will not count for conference record as the Rattlers come to Laredo for the final home series of the 2018 season.
 
UP NEXT:
The Dustdevils return to Laredo for their next slate of games. TAMIU will host Arkansas-Fort Smith on March 22 and 23. The series opens 2018 Heartland Conference action with Thursday's games being played at Jorge Haynes Field and Friday's games at Uni-trade Stadium.
