CARROLTON, Texas - Texas A&M International (2-12) dropped their final match in the Heartland Conference Pre-Season Tournament to St. Edward's (10-5) in a 3-1 decision (25-17, 26-24, 25-10, 25-20).
The beginning of the match was a back-and-forth affair with five lead changes in the first 11 points. St. Edward's came out on top as they broke out on a 5-2 run to take a 10-8 lead. Another 6-1 run gave them a 16-13 lead, which they would hold on to for the remainder of the set. They took the frame with a 25-17 decision.
The second set looked much like the beginning of the first, except with the Dustdevils breaking out with a 5-1 run to take a 7-3 lead early. The Hilltoppers answered with a 7-1 run of their own to take a 10-8 lead. TAMIU kept battling and retook the lead 16-14. Things would get extremely close for here on out, but the Dustdevils came out on top 26-24.
After the break, SEU came out on fire and dominated in the third set. They opened the frame on an 8-3 run and never looked back. At its height, their lead stretched to 21-6. They eventually took the set 25-10.
In the fourth and final set, TAMIU looked to have rebounded from the third set as they led the Hilltoppers 7-5 early. However, that lead would not hold as St. Edward's went on an 8-0 run to take a 15-9 lead. They would keep the advantage as they finished the set and the match on a 6-1 run to claim 25-20 decision.
The Dustdevils will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 25 as they begin Heartland Conference play on the road at St. Mary's.
