Dustdevils Drop Conference Opener In Straight Sets

SAN ANTONIO - Texas A&M International (2-13, 0-1 HC) dropped the season opener in straight sets (26-28, 16-25, 22-25) to St. Mary's (6-9, 1-0 HC) on Tuesday.

While TAMIU didn't come out with the win, freshman Maison Kosse etched her name in the record books as her 34 assists broke her into the All-Time Top 10 in school history, with 263 career assists so far.

The opening set was an extremely close battle that featured 12 ties and five lead changes. The Dustdevils grabbed the lead early with a 2-0 advantage. They would hold the lead for much of the early portions of the frame, with the Rattlers not gaining their first lead at 9-8 and relinquishing shortly there after. Thanks to a 4-1 run, TAMIU opened up a 15-12 lead and pushed out to 19-15 and then 22-18 advantages. However, St. Mary's made a late rally to retake the lead at 24-23 and eventually took the set 28-26.

The Rattlers carried the momentum into the second set, while the Dustdevils suffered from a bit of a hangover from the previous set. St. Mary's opened on a 4-1 run and held the lead from wire to wire in the set. TAMIU was able to pull within a point a couple of times early but was unable mount a substantial comeback, falling 25-16.

After falling behind 4-0 early in the third set, it looked to be more of the same. However, the Dustdevils found their footing and battled back to tie the set at 13-13. From there, things grew close for much of the set, but a 6-2 run that put the Rattlers up 21-16 broke TAMIU's back. The Dustdevils attempted to muster all the fight they could to pull within one at 23-22, but a kill and service ace with seal the victory for St. Mary's 25-22.

TAMIU will return to Laredo to begin the home conference slate on Saturday, Sept. 29 as they play host to Lubbock Christian at noon.
