Dustdevils Fall to Newman in Home Opener

LAREDO, Texas - Texas A&M International (1-4, 0-3 HC) fell 4-1 against Newman (6-1, 2-1 HC) in their home opener on Thursday night, with all but one of the goals coming in the first 10 minutes.

The offensive fire power was on display for both squads early in the match. The Jets broke the seal in the fourth minute as Grace Linton drilled a shot in on a pass from Vanessa Ortiz. However, TAMIU junior Cio Bargallo scored the equalizer just 50 seconds later off a free kick from junior Porsche Miseles-Huff to knot it at one all.

NU wouldn't stay down for long however, as they would rapidly go up 3-1 with goals in the eighth minute, with Linton scoring her second, and in the ninth minute by Colleen Howland. The Jets scored their final goal in the 25th minute as Vanessa Ortiz found the back of the net with an assist from Howland.

The Dustdevils had a chance to cut the deficit late in the first half as Miseles-Huff had one shot blocked and the rebound shot saved in the 30th minute.

In the second half the offense slowed as Newman only took six shots compared to the 11 in the first half and TAMIU only shot twice.

The Dustdevils will look to get back in the win column on Saturday, Sept. 22 as they continue Heartland Conference play against Rogers State at 1 p.m.
