LAREDO, Texas - Texas A&M International (1-9) fell in their 2018 home opener to UT Permian Basin (5-3) by a score of 3-1 (20-25, 25-9, 25-20, 25-19) on Friday.
The Dustdevils opened on a 7-2 run in the first set. However, UTPB fought all the way back to tie the game at 8-8. From there it became a tightly contested battle for a while, but the Falcons won the opening set as they closed it out on a 5-1 run to take the 25-20 decision.
UTPB used that momentum in the second set as they went on an 11-3 run to start the set and never looked back. They lead by as a much as 19-5. The Falcons eventually took the set 25-9.
After the break, the third set began with neither team able to gain an advantage. The Dustdevils finally managed to break out with a 8-5 lead. They did not trail for the remainder of the set, and took the 25-20 decision to force the fourth set.
The fourth and final set played out much like the first set, in that TAMIU managed to start with a sizable lead, but slowly ceded ground to UTPB. The Falcons managed to take the set and match with a 25-19 decision.
The Dustdevils will be back in action tomorrow as they welcome Western New Mexico at Noon.Â
