TAMIU draws with UT Permian Basin

ODESSA, Texas – Texas A&M International University women's soccer (2-6-2, 1-3-2 LSC) settled for a scoreless Lone Star Conference draw with the UT Permian Basin Falcons (0-9-1, 0-6-1 LSC) on Thursday evening.

The Dustdevils wasted no time applying offensive pressure as Vivian Martinez fired a shot 1:52 in, but was saved on the bottom right side of the net by Falcon goalkeeper, Marlise Bond. 

UT Permian Basin responded with a shot on goal at the 9:15 mark when Deonna Calhoun was rejected by Dustdevil netminder Ashley Barrientos. 

The Falcons almost scored a goal but Ariel Roybal's shot hit off the crossbar in the 14th minute to continue the 0-0 match. 

TAMIU had multiple opportunities as the team took five consecutive shots in a span of 18:23 (22:13-40:36) including a pair of shots on goal that were attempted by midfielder, Samantha Ruiz, at 23:24, and was capped off by defender Tamara Cafuta. 

The Dustdevils and the Falcons were locked in a 0-0 match heading into the break. 

TAMIU midfielder, Izabella Correa took the first shot attempt of the second half but was wide left in the 54th minute. 

In the 78th minute, Dustdevil midfielder Nayeli Betancourt took a shot that was headed towards the bottom left side of the net, but saved by Bond. 

Barrientos stopped a shot by Kalia Beckwith in the 83rd minute that would ultimately send the defensive stalemate into overtime. 

Dustdevil forward Maddison Schofield took the lone shot of the first overtime period but sailed over the right side of the goal.

There were no shots were taken by either team in the second overtime period to conclude the 0-0 draw. 

Barrientos and Bond both turned away four shots. The cleansheet was Barrientos' first of her career.

In the end, the Dustdevils led the way in shots (13-10) while the Falcons controlled the corner with a 5-4 edge. Both teams finished with four shots on goal apiece. 

The Dustdevils will conclude their two-game road trip with a Lone Star Conference matchup against the Lubbock Christian Lady Chaps (7-4-1, 4-2-1 LSC) on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 1 p.m.
