Dustdevils secure first Lone Star Conference victory

SAN ANTONIO – Texas A&M International University women's soccer (2-4-1, 1-1-1 LSC) claimed its first Lone Star Conference victory over St. Mary's (2-6-0, 0-3-0 LSC) by a score of 3-1 on Thursday evening. With the win, the Dustdevils and Rattlers split their season series for the second consecutive season. When these teams collide, the road team has won the last four matches dating back to the 2018 season.

The Dustdevils broke the scoring ice in the 38th minute of play when Samantha Bernal beat Rattler goalkeeper Erin Longford.

St. Mary's quickly responded as Gabby Olsen finished a feed from Micah Williams that got by Dustdevil netminder Ashley Barrientos in the 41st minute to send the 1-1 match into intermission.

In the second half, TAMIU's Gracielle Martinez found Izabella Correa to give the Dustdevils a one-goal advantage with 59:00 showing on the game clock.

The Rattlers tried to score the game-tying goal but Barrientos rejected a shot by Olsen on the bottom left side of the net.

The Dustdevils netted the final goal as Vivian Martinez found the back thanks to Martinez's second assist of the match. The assist marked her first-career multi-assist match and would ultimately cap off a 3-1 victory for TAMIU.

Barrientos posted five saves for the Dustdevils while Longford stopped a pair of shots in defeat for St. Mary's.

In the end, St. Mary's held the advantage in shots (18-14), shots on goal (6-5) and corner kicks (7-5).

The Dustdevils will return home to take on Lone Star Conference foe, Oklahoma Christian (0-8-0, 0-3-0 Lone Star Conference) on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.
