TAMIU drops match to Javelinas on the road

KINGSVILLE, Texas. - Texas A&M International volleyball (2-10, 0-3 LSC) fell in a 3-1 match (18-25, 28-26, 15-25, 18-25) to Texas A&M-Kingsville (13-6, 4-2 LSC) on Thursday.

Senior Annie Deininger led the Dustdevils with 14 kills as well as two blocks and a dig. Sophomore Samantha Herrera logged nine kills with three digs. Sophomore Maison Kosse posted season-high 39 assists to go along with eight digs and two kills. Senior Hannah Semon finished one dig shy of her season-high with 18 digs as well as three assists and two aces.

In the first set, the Javelinas jumped out to an early 7-2 lead. They controlled most of the set, pushing out to a 19-9 lead at its largest. However, late in the set, TAMIU attempted to mount a comeback with a 9-2 run to cut the lead to 21-18. Unfortunately, the comeback would come up short as TAMUK took the next four points for a 25-18 decision.

The second set was extremely close early with three lead changes and five ties in the first 12 points. The Javelinas managed to break loose thanks to a 5-1 run that gave them a 18-13 lead. However, TAMIU punched back with a 6-0 run to retake the advantage 19-18. Things were tight again for the remainder of the set with four lead changes and seven ties. The Dustdevils pulled out the frame by taking the final three points for a 28-26 decision.

After the break, the Dustdevils came into the third set with an early 5-3 lead. TAMUK steadied themselves and ripped off a 7-1 run to take the 14-8 advantage. They managed to push the deficit out to 22-13 and closed out the frame on a 3-1 run to take the 25-15 decision.

The Javelinas carried their momentum into the fourth set as they opened on a 10-3 run. TAMIU didn't back down and fought to cut the deficit to 12-10. However, TAMUK responded with another long run of 8-2 for a 20-12 lead. The Dustdevils refused to die though and managed to trim the score to 23-18. The Javelinas finished off the match with two-straight kills for the 25-18 decision.

Both teams will now travel to Laredo for the second match of the season series on Sat., Oct. 5 at 1 p.m.
