LAREDO, Texas. -Â Texas A&M International volleyball (2-11, 0-4 LSC) fell in a 3-0 match (26-28, 19-25, 19-25) to Texas A&M-Kingsville (14-6, 4-0 LSC) on Saturday.
Sophomore Mackenzie Catalina led the Dustdevils with her third double-double of the season with 14 kills and 12 digs as well as two aces. Senior Annie Deininger posted 19 kills and two blocks. Sophomore Maison Kosse logged 34 assists with five digs and a block. Senior Hannah Semon contributed 17 digs and two assists.
The first set was extremely close through out, including five ties and four lead changes in the first 16 points. TAMIU managed to break out with a 4-0 run to take a 10-7 lead. The advantage was short lived however, as the Javelinas raced back to retake the lead 13-12 as part of a 6-2 run. Both teams traded runs for the next several rallies with neither team able to get more than a three-point advantage. The Dustdevils eventually came out on top with a 22-19 lead. They forced set point at 24-20 only to have TAMUK score five-straight points to retake the advantage 25-24. TAMIU tied the set two more times before the Javelinas won the set 28-26 by scoring two straight points.
The second set was equally as close for most of the frame with neither team able to get much distance until TAMUK went up 18-15. From there, the Dustdevils were never able to close the gap enough to prevent the Javelinas from taking the frame 25-19.
TAMUK carried the momentum into the third set as they opened on a 5-2 run. TAMIU fought back and took the lead 9-8. However, the Javelinas did not flinch and came to take an 11-9 lead, and pushed out to their largest lead of the frame at 18-13. TAMIU tried to rally but once again could not cut the deficit. TAMUK took the match with a 25-19 decision in the final frame.
The Dustdevils will be back in action as they begin a two-match road trip on Friday, Oct. 11 in San Antonio, Texas as they face off against St. Mary's.
