TAMIU Drops 3-1 Decision To St. Edward’s

LAREDO, Texas - Texas A&M International volleyball (5-19, 3-14 LSC) fell to St. Edward's (17-8, 8-1 LSC) in a 3-1 decision (18-25, 22-25, 25-13, 25-14) on Friday.

Sophomore Mackenzie Catalina paced the Dustdevils with a double-double of 15 kills and 12 digs with a block and an assist. Senior Annie Deininger logged nine kills, two digs, two blocks and a service ace. Sophomore Maison Kosse posted a double-double of her own with 36 assists and 13 digs to go along with two blocks and a service ace. Senior Hannah Semon contributed 17 digs and an assist.

The Hilltoppers jumped out to a 7-3 lead early in the first set. They then managed to push out to 17-8 advantage, thanks to a 7-1 run. TAMIU battled to close the gap pulling in at their closest at 23-18. However, SEU would take the next three points to claim a 25-18 decision.

The second set was much closer early on with five ties and two lead changes. The Hilltoppers took their first lead of the set at 8-7, but the Dustdevils managed to keep it close for the majority of the frame. TAMIU fought to tie things at 17-17, unfortunately that would be as close as they would get. SEU eventually took the set 25-22.

The Dustdevils seemed to find their footing in the third set as they opened on a 5-3 lead. The Hilltoppers  rallied to tie things at 9-9. However, TAMIU answered by going on a 12-2 run to take a 21-11 lead. They took four of the final five points to force a fourth set with a 25-13 decision.

SEU bounced back in a major way in the fourth set with a 6-2 lead to start the frame. They eventually ran out to a 16-6 lead thanks to a 10-2 run. The Hilltoppers pushed out to their largest lead of the set at 23-10. Even though the Dustdevils would mount a 4-1 run to cut the deficit 24-14, SEU took the match with a 25-14 decision.

TAMIU will close out the regular season on Saturday against St. Mary's on Senior Day as 1 p.m.
