Dustdevils softball splits Heartland Conference twinbill with Lubbock Christian University

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas A&M International University softball (7-13, 1-3 Heartland Conference) split decisions with Lubbock Christian University (11-4, 2-2 Heartland Conference) on Friday afternoon. 
 

Game 1: Texas A&M International 9, Lubbock Christian 4  

In the home half of the first inning, the Lady Chaps broke the scoring ice off of Dustdevils starter, Sara Caterson  (W, 3-4: 7 IP, 11 H, 4 ER, K, 3 BB) when KK Lopez-Liu (3-for-4, RBI, 2 R) hit an RBI single that plated home Savannah Wysocki.  

The Dustdevils immediately countered in the top of the second as Melanie Gamboa grounded out that scored Shelby Edwards (2-for-4, R) to knot the game at one apiece. The following hitter, Gabrielle Mitchell (1-for-3, 2 RBI, R) smacked a two-run single through the right side off of LCU starter, Taylor Franco (L, 4-2: 5.1 IP, 7 H, 8 R, 5 ER, 8 K, 2 BB) to give TAMIU a two-run edge (3-1).

In the bottom of the second frame, Morgan Dufour hit a solo blast over the right center field fence to cut the Lady Chaps' deficit to one (3-2).

Lubbock Christian closed the gap in the bottom of the third inning when K'leigh Arredondo hit a game-tying single to left field that brought home Lopez-Liu (3-3).  

In the top of the fifth inning, TAMIU put together a pair of runs to regain the lead. Maddison Schofield (2-for-4, 2 RBI) slapped an RBI single up the middle and Morgan Chavarria (1-for-3, RBI, R, BB, SB) crossed the plate on a wild pitch for the fifth Dustdevil run (5-3).

In the top of the sixth inning, the Dustdevils compiled a trio of runs to add on to their lead. The scoring was ignited when Gamboa scored on a throwing error by the third baseman, Dufour, and was capped off on another RBI single by Schofield to give TAMIU an 8-4 lead.

In the final inning, Denise Longoria slapped a pinch-hit RBI single to center field that scored Sumer Woodson to settle the 9-4 Heartland Conference road victory.

 

Game 2: Lubbock Christian 5, Texas A&M International 1

For the second consecutive game, the Lady Chaps got on the board first when Arredondo hit a single up the middle off of Dustdevils starter, Jenika Lombrana (L, 2-6: 6 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 3 BB) that brought home Lindzi Clemmer and Megan Darling to give the home team a 2-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Annika Schwartzenberg delivered a pinch-hit two-run single. The following batter, Wysocki smacked a three-bagger that scored pinch-runner Alexa Riggs to extend the Lady Chaps' lead to five (5-0).

In the top of the fifth inning, TAMIU scored its lone run of the game on a two-out solo blast by Schofield off of Lady Chaps starter Jordan Wehr (W, 4-2: 6.1 IP, 5 H, ER, K, BB) that put the finishing touches on a 5-1 road setback.   

The Dustdevils return home for a Heartland Conference doubleheader against Newman University (2-7, 1-3 Heartland Conference) on Friday, March 8 at 12 p.m.
