LAREDO, Texas - Texas A&M International University softball (9-13, 3-3 Heartland Conference) swept a Heartland Conference doubleheader against Newman University (4-11, 2-6 Heartland Conference) on Friday afternoon.
Game 1: Texas A&M International 7, Newman 3
In the home half of the first inning, the Morgan Chavarria smacked a solo home run over the center field fence off of Jets starter, Chantel Purcella (5 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 5 K, 2 BB) to give TAMIU the game's first run.
In the bottom of the third inning, Shelby Edwards (3-for-4, RBI, R) smacked a single into left field that drove home Maddison Schofield to extend the Dustdevils' lead to two (2-0).
The Jets answered quickly when Jamee Compton hit a run-scoring single off of Dustdevils starter Jenika Lombrana (W, 3-6: 7 IP, 12 H, 3 ER, 7 K, BB) that brought the Jets within one (2-1) in the top of the fourth frame.
In the bottom of the fourth, TAMIU regained its two-run edge when Morgan Chavarria hit a sacrifice fly to center field that plated home Gabrielle Mitchell (3-1).
In the top of the final inning, the Jets battled back when Bailey Bugner and Emma Eck hit solo home runs to knot the game at three apiece.
The Dustdevils closed out the game in style as Alyssa Contreras smacked a walk-off grand slam that scored, Lindsey Smith (3-for-4, R) in the bottom of the last inning off of Bugner (L, 1-3, IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 2 BB) to seal the dramatic victory.
Game 2: Texas A&M International 3, Newman 2
The Jets were looking for revenge in the second game and broke the scoring ice in the opening frame when Lacey Colvin reached on a miscue by starting pitcher
Sara Caterson (W, 4-4: 7 IP, 9 H, ER, 3 K) that brought home Lauren Kuhrt (4-for-4, R).
Newman struck again the following inning as Compton scored on an RBI single that plated Shanda Cox (2-for-3, R) to give the Jets a two-run edge.
In the bottom of the third, the Dustdevils showed their resiliency when Edwards hit a single into left field that scored Schofield (2-for-3, R) and Smith to tie the game at two.
TAMIU pushed out in front of Newman in the bottom of the fourth inning when Smith hit an RBI single into right field that drove home

Caterson finished the game strong as she put together five consecutive scoreless innings to close out the game and complete the doubleheader sweep of Newman.
The Dustdevils will host the final matchup of a three-game series with Newman University (4-11, 2-6 Heartland Conference) on Saturday, March 9 at 12 p.m.
