Dustdevils Lose Season Finale To St. Mary’s In Heartbreaker

LAREDO, Texas - Texas A&M International men's basketball (6-21, 3-13 HC) saw their season come to an end in heartbreaking fashion in a 58-56 loss to St. Mary's (12-16, 4-12 HC) on Saturday.

Junior Brent Finn led the Dustdevils with 19 points as well as five assists, two steals and a rebound. In his final game in maroon and silver, senior Xabier Gomez posted 18 points, three rebounds and an assist. With his performance today, Gomez ends his Dustdevil career sitting in fifth place all-time in school history in points.

The game played out as a tale of two halves. TAMIU roared out the gate, opening on a 16-4 run in the first 10 minutes. The Rattlers began to find their footing and put together a 10-0 run to pull within two points at 16-14 with 6:28 left in the half. Things would remain close for the remainder of the period, with the Dustdevils taking a 27-24 lead into the break.

The second half was as close a half of basketball as TAMIU has played all season, with 13 lead changes and six ties. Neither team was able to get more than a couple points distance the entire half. St. Mary's would take a 55-54 lead with 1:48 left in the game. The Dustdevils cut it to 57-56 with two free throws from Gomez. The Rattlers would push it back out to 58-56 with a made free throw. Needing at least two points to keep the season alive, TAMIU was unable to get a shot off in the final eight seconds. St. Mary's would take the 58-56 win.
