LAREDO, Texas - Texas A&M International University softball (14-17, 8-7 Heartland Conference) won its Heartland Conference matchup against St. Mary's University (17-15, 7-6 Heartland Conference) on Friday afternoon by a score of 3-0.
In the home half of the first inning,
Morgan Chavarria smacked a solo home run over the center field fence off of Rattlers starter, Staci Johns (L, 9-8: 6 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 5 K, BB) to give TAMIU the game's first run. Two batters later,
Shelby Edwards hit a single into right field that drove home
Maddison Schofield to extend the Dustdevils' lead to two (2-0).
In the bottom of the second inning,
Alyssa Contreras used a solo home run to left field, on a full count, to give TAMIU a 3-0 edge.
The three run cushion was more than enough run support for Dustdevils starting pitcher,
Jenika Lombrana. The freshman only surrendered three hits while striking out four batters en route to her sixth victory of the season.
Lombrana registered five innings in which she retired the Rattlers in order.
