TAMIU Softball completes three-game sweep over Newman

LAREDO, Texas - Texas A&M International University softball (10-13, 4-3 Heartland Conference) won at home against Newman University (4-12, 2-7 Heartland Conference) on Saturday afternoon to complete the three-game series sweep.

The Dustdevils scored all of their runs in the opening inning of play off of Jets starter, Dominique Payne (L, 1-5: IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 K). TAMIU broke the scoring ice on an RBI single by Denise Longoria that scored Maya Paul (2-for-4, R).

Later in the inning, Alyssa Contreras was hit by a pitch while the bases were juiced to give TAMIU a 2-0 edge. The following hitter, Melanie Gamboa smacked a single into center field and concluded the three-run inning (3-0).

Jenika Lombrana (W, 4-6: 7 IP, 9 H, ER, 7 K, BB) was stellar in the circle however, in the top of the fourth frame Kameron Pope hit a sacrifice fly that scored Emma Eck to cut the Dustdevils' lead to two (3-1).

After the sacrifice fly, Lombrana was locked in a pitcher's duel with Jets reliever Chantel Purcella (5 IP, 3 H, 3 BB, K) for the rest of the game as neither team scored a run in the final three innings to secure the 3-1 victory and complete the sweep over Newman.

The Dustdevils continue their homestand with a Heartland Conference doubleheader against St. Edward's University (5-9, 2-4 Heartland Conference) on Tuesday, March 12 at 12 p.m.
