LAREDO, Texas - Texas A&M International baseball (16-29, 7-12 HC) dropped the series opener 6-3 to St. Edward's (22-25, 9-10 HC) on Friday.
The Hilltoppers jumped on the board early as a RBI double to center in the second at-bat of the game gave them a 1-0 lead. They tacked on an insurance run in the second inning as a squeeze bunt scored the runner from third to give SEU a 2-0 lead.
From there, the game devolved into a pitcher's duel as both starters masterfully worked five shutout innings.
However, the Hilltopper bats came alive in the eighth inning and exploded for three runs. A leadoff solo shot scored one run, with the other two scoring on a RBI double and a RBI single to give them a 5-0 lead. They added one final run in the ninth off another leadoff solo blast to take a 6-0 advantage.
With their backs against the wall, the Dustdevils didn't quit fighting as Phillip Sanchez brought home Mathew Trevino with a two-run bomb to left. Daniel Espinosa would later score Obi Obinwa with a RBI single down the left field line to cut the lead to 6-3. Unfortunately, TAMIU could not complete the comeback as St. Edward's took the victory 6-3.
Nathan Medrano (3-4, 8.0 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO) earned the win, with Koehler Vandament (4) earning the save. Andrew Pavon (3-3, 7.0 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO) took the loss.
The Dustdevils will look to even the series tomorrow as both teams will meet in a doubleheader at 12 p.m. in the regular season finale on Senior Day.
