LAREDO, Texas -Â Texas A&M International baseball (16-31, 7-13 HC) fell in the regular season doubleheader finale to St. Edward's (25-25, 11-10 HC) on Senior Day Saturday.
GAME 1 - SEU 5, TAMIU 1
The Hilltoppers wasted no time jumping on the board in the first game of the day, as they pushed across four runs in the first inning. A bases-clearing double scored three runs with a sacrifice fly to left scoring the other run to give SEU an early 4-0 lead.
From there, both starters settled in for a hard fought pitcher's duel, with neither team allowing a run in the next three frames.
SEU added a run in the fifth off an RBI single to take a 5-0 lead.
With their backs against the wall, the Dustdevils attempted to rally in the bottom of the seventh, scoring two runs. Andrew Holsey brought home Mathew Trevino with a RBI single up the middle. Anthony Handel drew a bases loaded walk to score Phillip Sanchez later in the inning. Unfortunately, the comeback came up short as the Hilltoppers took the victory 5-2.
Ryan Hill (7-3, 6.2 IP, 4 H 2 R, 0 ER, 6 BB, 6 SO) earned the win, with Koehler Vandament (5) earning the save. Andrew Hernandez (4-5, 5.0 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO) took the loss.
GAME 2 - SEU 9, TAMIU 4
The second game was a much closer affair in the early goings.
SEU scored first again, plating one run in the top of the first off a RBI single through the left side of the infield. However, TAMIU would answer in the bottom half as senior Jorge Napoles brought home Holsey with a RBI fielder's choice to tie things 1-1.
The Hilltoppers retook the lead in the second, scoring two more runs. The first run scored on a throwing error by the catcher, with the second run coming across on a RBI single through the right side of the infield.
Once again, the Dustdevils responded in the bottom half of the inning tying things 3-3. Senior Mauro Luna scored as senior Daniel Espinosa grounded out to the second baseman. Hunter Trinidad scored during the next at-bat on a wild pitch.
SEU took the lead to stay 4-3 in the top of the third with a run scoring on a fielding error by the shortstop. They added three more runs in the fifth with the first run scoring on a RBI fielder's choice and the other two scoring on a two RBI single up the middle, taking a 7-3 lead.
TAMIU would get a run back in the fifth, as Espinoza scored Luna with a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 7-4.
The Hilltoppers added their final two runs in the seventh inning. The first run scored on a wild pitch, with the other run coming across on a RBI double to left, taking a 9-4 victory.
Cooper Bailey (4-3, 3.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO) earned the win, with Jacob McRoberts (1) earning the save. Ruben Solis (1-10, 4.0 7 H, 7 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 SO) took the loss.
