TAMIU Drops Decision To Fort Lewis

DURANGO, Colo. - Texas A&M International volleyball (1-4) dropped a 3-1 (25-23, 12-25, 11-25, 18-25) decision to Fort Lewis (4-3) in their second match of the Skyhawk Tournament on Friday.

Sophomore Mackenzie Catalina paced the Dustdevils with her second double-double of season, logging 16 kills and 11 digs as well as an ace. Both sophomore Elicia Jackson and junior Gabrielle Zamora posted seven kills, with Jackson adding a block. Sophomore Maison Kosse contributed 22 assists with two kills, two aces and a dig. Senior Hannah Semon led the squad with 13 digs.

The match was tightly contested early as neither team could get more than a two-point advantage. The Skyhawks were finally able to break loose as they went up 14-11. However, TAMIU rallied and tightened things again with a tie at 15-15. Points went back and forth for the next few rallies, until the Dustdevils closed out the set on a 6-2 run to claim the 25-23 decision.

Fort Lewis come out of the gate hot to start the second set as they opened with a 7-2 lead. TAMIU battled back and was able to cut the deficit to three points at 10-7. Unfortunately, the Skyhawks rattled off another 7-2 run to go back up 17-9. The eventually took the set 25-12 as part of an 8-3 run to end the frame.

The third set was all Fort Lewis as they opened on a 10-0 run to begin the frame. The Dustdevils tried to battle back and were able to cut the lead to 13-6, but that would be as close as they would get. The Skyhawks eventually took the set 25-11.

In the fourth set, TAMIU looked to have found its footing as they led 5-2 early. However, a 5-0 run from Fort Lewis gave the Skyhawks a 7-5 lead. TAMIU was able to tie things at 9-9, but another 8-2 run put Fort Lewis back up 17-11. They eventually took the match with a 25-18 decision in the set.

The Dustdevils will be back in action in the Skyhawk Tournament tomorrow as they face off against Adams State at 9:30 a.m.
