DURANGO, Colo. -Â Texas A&M International volleyball (1-5) dropped a 3-1 (25-22, 16-25 11-25, 18-25) decision to Adams State (3-4) in the first of two matches on Saturday.
Sophomore Mackenzie Catalina led the Dustdevils with 15 kills as well as five digs and three blocks. Sophomore Elicia Jackson posted eight kills and two blocks. Both senior Annie Deininger and freshman Carly Unruh logged six kills, with Deininger adding two digs and two blocks and Unruh adding four blocks, three aces, two digs, and two assists. Freshman Skylar Warde contributed 22 digs and an assist. Sophomore Allison Wade added 29 assists with four digs and two kills.Â
The first set was tightly contested throughout with six lead changes and five ties in the early in set. The Grizzlies managed to break away with a 3-0 run to take a 17-15 lead. However, TAMIU answered with a 5-1 run of their own to retake the lead 19-17. ASU tried to fight back and was able to tie it up 20-20, but that would be as close as they would get. The Dustdevils closed out the set on a 5-2 run to claim the frame 25-22.
In the second set, the Grizzlies were able to take a 6-2 advantage early. They were able to hold TAMIU at bay for most of the set thanks to multiple long runs, going up 15-7 at one point. However, the Dustdevils battled and were able to cut the deficit to three points at 17-14, but couldn't get closer. ASU closed out the frame on a 7-1 run to take a 25-16 decision.
TAMIU appeared to have found their footing after the break as they went up 3-1 to start the third set. They would hold on to the lead for the next several points, but a 5-1 run put the Grizzlies on top 9-6. From there, ASU strung together multiple point runs to put the set away, including a 10-1 run to close out the frame with a 25-11 decision.
The fourth set began with both teams trading points early with six ties in the first twelve rallies. However, ASU broke out with a 4-1 run to take a 10-7 advantage. As had been the case for most of the match, they again put together runs to extend their lead, including going up by their largest lead of the set at 22-14. TAMIU tried to rally but was only able to cut the deficit to 24-18 as ASU claimed the match with a 25-18 decision.
The Dustdevils will close out the Skyhawk Tournament later today as they face off against Lone Star Conference foe Western New Mexico at 1:30 p.m.Â
