LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International University women's soccer (1-2-0) faced a 4-3 non-conference setback against the Ouachita Baptist Tigers (2-2-0) on Saturday afternoon from Life High School Waxahachie in Waxahachie, Texas.
TAMIU broke the scoring ice 6:37 in when Vivian Martinez beat Tiger goalkeeper, Michele Snow to give the Dustdevils momentum early on. Only 1:19 later, Ouachita Baptist's Ashlyn Heckman was awarded a penalty kick. Heckman capitalized on the opportunity and booted a shot past Dustdevil netminder, Elena Rivera to knot the game at one apiece.
In the 12th minute, Josilyn Kispert finished a feed from Sydni Perry to give the Tigers a one-goal edge (2-1).
In the 22nd minute, Gracen Turner dished a pass to Heckman who scored her second goal in the opening half to give the Tigers a two-goal lead heading into intermission (3-1).
TAMIU tried to mount a comeback in the 63rd minute when Samantha Ruiz ripped a shot that got by Snow and slashed the deficit to one (3-2).
Heckman completed the hat trick with 70:51 showing on the clock and extended the Tiger lead back to a pair of goals (4-2).
TAMIU quickly responded just 29 seconds after Heckman completed the hat trick as Maddison Schofield found the back of the net for her team-leading second goal of the season to bring them back to within a goal (4-3).
In the 88th minute, Snow made her lone save of the match on a shot taken by Thirley Rodriguez that would ultimately secure the win for the Tigers.
TAMIU held the advantage in shots (13-10) and corner kicks (3-2) while Ouachita Baptist led the way in shots on goal (6-4).
The Dustdevils will travel to San Antonio, Texas to take on Northwestern Oklahoma State University in a non-conference matchup on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 1 p.m.
