LAREDO, Texas -Â Texas A&M International volleyball (2-8, 0-1 LSC) fell in a hard fought 3-1 decision (25-17, 25-27, 18-25, 19-25) on Friday to DBU (9-4, 2-1 LSC) to open the Lone Star Conference slate.
Sophomore Mackenzie Catalina led the Dustdevils and finished one dig shy of a double-double with 14 kills and nine digs, in addition to three blocks, two aces and an assist. Sophomore Allison Wade also finished just shy of a double-double with nine kills and 16 digs, as well as two aces. Sophomore Maison Kosse posted a season-high 39 assists to go along with six digs, a kill, a block and an ace. Senior Hannah Semon contributed 18 digs and an assist.
TAMIU looked good early in the first set as they raced out to a 12-8 lead. The Lady Patriots kept battling though and were able to trim the lead to 13-12. However, the Dustdevils countered with a 6-2 run to push back out to 19-14. They closed out the frame on a 5-1 run to take the 25-17 decision.
DBU found its footing between sets as they stormed out to a 5-0 lead to start the second frame. TAMIU bounced back and battled to tie things at 8-8. For the next several points, neither team was able to get more than a two-point lead. Finally, the Lady Patriots managed to break away with another 5-0 run to take a 19-15 lead. Once again though, the Dustdevils fought back and retied the game at 21-21. The set grew tight again as both teams traded the next few points. TAMIU looked like they might take the frame with set point at 25-24, but DBU would get three-straight points to take the 27-25 decision.
The Dustdevils took another early lead in the third set with a 10-5 advantage. However, the Lady Patriots came all the way back and put the set out of reach with 7-0 and 8-0 run, taking the lead 20-12. TAMIU fought hard to close the deficit, but could only get within five points at most. DBU eventually took the set 25-18.
The fourth set saw the Lady Patriots jump out to an early 13-6 lead. Once again, the Dustdevils refused to die and battled to trim the deficit, but once again they came up just short and were only able to get within three points at 22-19. DBU took the match with a 25-19 decision.
TAMIU will be back in action tomorrow for the second game of the homestand as they welcome Tarleton State at 1 p.m.
