OGDEN, Utah -Â Texas A&M International University women's basketball defeated its second Division I opponent in five days, topping the Big Sky Conference's Weber State Wildcats 60-46. The victory caps off arguably the biggest week in program history.
TAMIU used the same formula it did against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi earlier in the week, play strong defense and hit the outside shot.Â
The Dustdevils trailed in the contest for just nine seconds and that was in the first quarter.Â
Leading after the first quarter 17-10 behind 3-8 shooting from three, the Dustdevils took a 29-19 lead into the half thanks to superb defense. In the first half, the Dustdevils held the Wildcats to 8-24 shooting from the field and 0-5 from three-point range.Â
The third quarter saw both teams have their highest scoring frame with TAMIU outscoring the Wildcats 20-18 to up its lead to 49-37.
The Dustdevils went into complete lockdown mode in the fourth, holding the Wildcats to just 25% shooting in the quarter to cap off a second straight double-digit victory over a Division I opponent.
As a team, the Dustdevils shot 40% from the floor and 34.8% from three. TAMIU also out-rebounded the Wildcats 37-34, as well as forcing 17 turnovers. Defensively, the Dustdevils limited the Wildcats to 33.3% shooting (18-54) including 0-12 from behind the arc.
Senior Nicole Heyn led the way for the Dustdevils with her second double-double, scoring a game high 21 points and a team high 11 rebounds. Heyn shot 8-12 from the field and a stellar 5-8 from behind the arc.
Senior Patrycja Jaworska added 14 points and four assists to the cause. Senior Eva Langton chipped in seven point along with eight rebounds, freshman Silvia Blanco scored five points and graduate senior Jazmine Covington and sophomore Clara Fernandez both chipped in four points.
