LAREDO, Texas – Sophomore
Bre DeLon scored a game high 16 points added nine rebounds and had four steals in her first game as a Dustdevil, leading Texas A&M International (1-0, 1-0 LSC) to a 57-51 win over Oklahoma Christian (0-1, 0-1 LSC).
It wasn't the cleanest game played by the Dustdevils in 2020 as they committed 32 turnovers in the victory. Despite those turnovers, TAMIU was able to counter by out-rebounding the Eagles 42-26, playing tenacious defense and timely shooting.
The Dustdevils jumped out to a 19-11 lead after the first quarter behind seven points from junior
Josselin Geer, along with shooting 46.2% from the field and 4-for-6 from three.
At halftime the lead was 29-23 in favor of the Dustdevils. Oklahoma Christian, despite 20% shooting in the quarter and 25% total in the first half, the Eagles trimmed the lead by getting to the free throw line.
In the third quarter, each team caught some fire offensively as both shot 6-for-14 in the stanza. DeLon, who came off the bench in the first half and started the second half was the catalyst for the Dustdevils scoring 10 points in the quarter.
The Eagles received all-around contributions in the third as senior Katie Mayo, 2019-2020 Honorable Mention All-LSC honoree and the team/s leading scoring last year chipped in her first four points of the game, while sophomore Emma Epperly and senior Tyra Peck added in four points as well.
Much like the second quarter, it was a defensive battle in the fourth as both teams clamped down. The Dustdevils held the Eagles to just 27% shooting over the final 10 minutes, while the Eagles held the Dustdevils to 25% from the floor.
After being held scoreless since the first quarter, it was Geer's three-pointer with 1:41 remaining that pushed the lead back to nine for TAMIU, ultimately closing out the win.
In the victory, the Dustdevils shot 36.5% from the field and 32.1% from three, all while limiting the Eagles to 29.8% from inside the arc and 27.3% from behind the arc.
Three Dustdevils hit double figures on the night: DeLon, Geer (10 points) and senior
Patrycja Jaworska (15 points). Senior
Eva Langton chipped in seven points and eight rebounds while fellow senior
Nicole Heyn notched five points and 11 rebounds.
